NORTH GLOS' FIRST HALF EFFORT SEES OFF STUDENTS
THE North Gloucester Combination Under-23 side beat Gloucestershire University at Longlevens. The Combination got off to a superb start with their forwards pushing the visitors back into their 22. A pop pass from Chosen Hill's fly-half Andy King, allowed Widden's Wayne Thomas to crash through to finish off a superb try. The Combination forwards, including Flinter, Dix, Tippings, Bennett, Gwilt, Jones, Hurdle and Carroll, played well throughout. They bonded quickly as a pack and were well directed by scrum-half Gareth Evans. Half-backs King and Evans linked well to set up the next try with quick ball from a ruck ending up in the hands of Widden's Stuart Carroll, who crashed through a tackle to score under the posts and King converted. A turnover near the halfway and a good couple of snap balls by the forwards, allowed Thomas to pick up his second score and King converted again. Stuart Carroll drove through the opposition defence for his second try, converted by King. The Combination's last try came from the Coney Hill centre, Rory Baker, who picked up a loose ball just outside the visitors' 22 and used his pace to get to the line, brushing off an attempted tackle on the way through. King was successful once again with the conversion. The students pulled a try back after some individual brilliance from the left wing.
The University sent on their Under-21s for the second half and this tested the Combination defence, but Joshua Greene, Jeff Hodges, John Zecca and Dave Kingscott stood firm. Midway through the second half, Evans was sinbinned. The University capitalised and scored within five minutes, but it proved to be the final try of the contest. The game was well officiated by Nigel Stevenson.
